Neff began his relationship with this important patron working on the stables for Libbey's large Ojai, CA estate. Libbey was an important industrialist, involved in two large glass companies in Toledo, Ohio, and a generous donor for the arts, bankrolling the notable Toledo Museum of Art and numerous cultural buildings in his winter home, Ojai. He came to Ojai first in 1908 to visit a friend, Harrison H. Sinclair, and he spent increasing amounts of time here after 1914; (In 1908, Sinclair built a new house for himself in Ojai, and this may have spurred Libbey to consider building his own residnece there.)
