By 09/18/2007, the Seattle Parks Foundation had raised $18 million of the $20 million required to construct this 12-acre park on the south end of Lake Union. At this time, a new seawall had been constructed and the site was about to receive landfill from the excavation of a nearby research facility. A pedestrian bridge linking South Lake Union Park with green space on Westlake Avenue was to be erected in 01/2008. The park was also to feature a 300-foot-long fountain that people can walk through, a model-boat pond, and earthworks designed to baffle noise from busy nearby streets. Hardscape was to consist of crushed shells rather than asphalt or concrete. Lake Union Park opened for use on 09/25/2010. Funds furnished by the Seattle Parks Foundation, the Seattle City Council ($4,228,000) and the City of Seattle Pro-Parks Levy of 2000 ($5,000,000 paid for its design and construction. The City had accumulated 12 acres of land along Lake Union's south shore gradually; the final 5 acres came from the US Navy, which had operated the adjacent United States Navy Naval Reserve Building, from 1942-1998. The Navy transferred the land to the city on 07/01/2000.
