In 1972, a notorious robbery netting $30 million occurred at this branch of the United California Bank, located in the Monarch Bay Shopping Center. The bank was located just off the Pacific Coast Highway, making this an easy target for criminal, Phil Christopher, and his crew. The book, Superthief: A Master Burglar, the Mafia, and the Biggest Bank Heist in U.S. History," by Rick Porrello described this event.
