AKA: O'Shaughnessy Dam, Tuolumne County, CA
Structure Type: built works - infrastructure
Designers: [unspecified]
Dates: constructed 1914-1934
The dam had been designed originally to grow in height, utilizing reinforced foundations and a stepped dam face. Vertical expansion occurred in 1935 and 1938, the infrastructure project providing public jobs for many unemployed during the Depression. The extra height (85 feet) enabled higher reservoir capacity, improving year-around power in the dry summer and early fall, and increasing San Francisco's drinking water supplies. In the 1930s, a new spillway and outlet channels were rebuilt to accommodate the dam's larger capacity.
