At one time, La Brea Avenue featured many buildings designed in Art Deco and Streamline Moderne Styles; by 1985, when David Gebhard and Robert Winter wrote their Architecture in Los Angeles A Compleat Guide (Salt Lake City, UT: Gibbs M. Smith Publishers, Incorporated, 1985, p. 195), very few of these modern stores remained. The 153 La Brea Avenue Store was a rare, if run-down, survivor.
