The date for the building of the first bridge in El Monte is not known. Since a bridge was needed to cross the San Gabriel River during the winterm the local citizens probably constructed one in the 1850s. However the first aid from the county came in 1861 when the supervisors [allocated] $400 for a bridge across the Arroya de Rosa Castillo to the west of town.
