The 1870 US Census indicated that Remer lived in a rooming house run by his mother-in-law, Eliza Ware, on Lexington Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets. One member of the Ware household was James E. Her first name has been spelled variously as "Eleanor" and "Elenor," but the correct spelling seems to have been "Elinor."

Her parents were John Plankinghorn Ware (1809-1854) and Eliza Alvord Ware (1811-1895).
