Brust was born in Columbus, OH, on ?, to Wilhelm Brust and Maria Lehnert, immigrants from northern and southern Germany.

While a student in 1908, he lived with a relative, Frank B. Brust, who worked as a traveling salesman for the firm of Jaffee and Company, a wholesale and retail liquor dealer. (See R.L. In 1910, Brust boarded at 625 5th Avenue West in Seattle. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Seattle City Directory, 1910, p. 325.) Two William Brusts were listed in the R.L. Polk and Company's Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1911, p. 283, one of whom was the quartermaster on the S.S. Minnesota and the other who resided at the King County Poor Farm. In the next year's city directory, two William Brusts were again listed, the architect, who lived at 6223 Palatine Avenue, and the other who remained an inmate at the Poor Farm. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1912, p. 261.) Brust got married in 1912, and he and his wife remained at 6223 Palatine Avenue in 1913. (See R.L. His father was Wilhelm [William] Brust (born 08/03.1853 in Prussia-d. 12/29/1923 in Columbus, OH) worked as a stone mason in Columbus, OH, according to the 1880 US Census.

His mother Maria [Mary] E. Lehnert (born 10/22/1858 in Bavaria-d. 02/01/1937 in Columbus, OH) married William on 06/06/1878 in Franklin County, OH. (Her name may have been spelled "Lehnart.")
