At age 51, Oliphant was driving a automobile when he tried to beat a speeding Southern Pacific Railroad passenger train to a crossing on 07/31/1919, causing a collision. A passenger in the car, architect George A. Dodge, (1864-1919), was killed at the scene near French Camp, CA. Oliphant survived the collision to live another 24 years.

Oliphant was buried at the Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, CA.

His father was Henry Duncan Oliphant, (born c. 1817 in Beverly, MA-d. 08/06/1900 in West Orange, NJ).His mother was Hannah Call Woodman Oliphant (born 02/12/1818 in Newburyport, MA-d. 06/11/1865 in Brooklyn, NY). They wed in 1840.
