Born in Fort Madison, IA, Beimer lived in that city with his parents, Henry and Mary Beimer, as per the 1870 US Census. They resided next door to Anthony's grandparents, Anton and Margaret Beimer. At the time, the family had managed to accumulate modest wealth. The census recorded that Henry and Mary owned $300 worth of real estate and $300 of personal savings. His grandparents owned $600 worth of real estate and had $200 in personal wealth, having increased from $500 and $20, ten years before. It is likely that this was the same house. His father was Henry Beimer, Sr., (born c. 1848 in MO), his mother, Anna Maria Triens (born c. 1849 in Prussia). The 1870 US Census indicated that Henry worked as a carpenter, as did his father Anton (born c. 1814 in Prussia). His mother and paternal grandmother, Margaret (born c. 1807 in Prussia), both worked in their homes. Anthony's mother had been naturalized an American citizen in 1884, according to the 1900 US Census.
