Born in the east-central IL town of Mattoon, David M. Checkley, Sr., was born three months to the day after a devastating, F4 tornado tore through the town, killing 101 people and injuring about 638. This tornado ranked as the third deadliest in IL history in 2018. David and his family continued to live in a rebuilding Mattoon according to the US Census of 1920. His family lived at 408 South 15th Street in rented accommodations. Ten years later, the Checkleys lived at 2921 Western Avenue in Mattoon, in a house that they owned. Parents

His father was Horace Russell Checkley (born 1891-d. 06/29/1968), his mother, Mildred Lemert, (born 1893 in CO-d. 03/11/1970 in Mattoon, IL). They married about 1914. Horace was an insurance agent. Mildred managed the household, that included, in 1930, two children, David and his younger sister, Elizabeth (born c. 1923 in IL).

By 1940, Horace ran a real estate company, and the family was prosperous enough to hire a housekeeper, Cora Lahrman (born c 1922 in IL).

Children

He had a son, David M. Checkley, Jr.
