In 1861, John J. Newsom lived on Gloucester Street East in the Saint James Ward of Toronto, ON. It was a two-story, wood-frame house set on a quarter-acre lot. His mother Jessie operated a boarding house with about five residents and eight children living here. In 1869, Newsom resided in the town of Clinton (now a part of Oakland), in Alameda County, CA. He commuted to San Francisco to work in the Hoagland and Newsom architectural office. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1869, p. 469.)

Parents

His mother was Jessie Livingston Newsom (born c. 1821 in Glasgow, Scotland-d.12/09/1892 in Oakland, CA). As noted above she managed a boarding house and a large family in Toronto, ON, in the early 1860s.
