Fulton, John Charles, Architect and Builder
Fulton learned carpentry while working for a maternal uncle in his flour and paper mills in Irwin, PA. He supplemented his apprenticeship in construction working with his uncles who had a successful contracting business operating throughout Westmoreland County, PA, after the Civil War. Principal, John Charles Fulton, Building Contractor and Architect, Uniontown, PA, c. 1880-1915. Fulton became specialist in church design, and had church plans of his built in Seattle and Tacoma, WA.

Parents
His father was James Fulton (1821-1882), who did various jobs throughout his life, iworking as a "farmer, lock-keeper onf the Youghioghey river...merchant and school-teacher" (See Charles Blanchard, The Progressive Men of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,[Logansport, Ind.: A. W. Bowen and Co., 1900],v. 1, p. 426.)His mother, Mary Sophia Markle Fulton (1824-1916), came from a prominent family in Western PA. Following her husband's early death in 1882, she utilized Markle family funds to maintain her household. She was one of eight children of Jasper Markle (1790-1880) and Mary Lobingier Markle (1792-1881).

He married Mary E. Ray (b. 1860) of West Union, PA, on 01/01/1889.
Children
When surveyed in 1900, he and Mary Ray Fulton had two children, a son, Thomas Ray Fulton (b. 01/06/1892), and a daughter, Helen Marie Fulton.
Biographical Notes
Fulton was active an elder in the 1st Presbyterian Church in Uniontown, PA.
As his success working as a contractor and architect increased, Fulton became involved in local Republican politics, the coke production business and banking. Director, Citizens Title and Trust Company, Uniontown, PA, (chartered 1901); Director, Waltersburg Coke Company, Waltersburg, PA; Director, Connellsville Consolidated Coke Company, Connellsville, PA. He was also a 32nd-degree Mason and a member of the Uniontown Country Club, Uniontown, PA.
