His mother was Henrietta Anne Sanders Applegarth (born 12/1831 in England). She had been born in Walcot, Somerset, a suburb of the city of Bath, the daughter of John Arnold and Fanny Sanders. He was an artist. His father was John Applegarth, a native of Canada.

She arrived in the US, according to the 1900 US Census, in 1868. According to the US Census of 1870, she lived with the Canadian architect, George Hippisley Sanders (1837-1920), in San Francisco. In that year, Sanders owned real estate worth about $7,000 and had a personal fortune of $4,500; Henrietta had personal assets of $2,000.
