His mother was Henrietta Anne Sanders Applegarth (born 12/1831 in England). She had been born in Walcot, Somerset, a suburb of the city of Bath, the daughter of John Arnold and Fanny Sanders. He was an artist. His father was John Applegarth, a native of Canada.

In that year, Sanders owned real estate worth about $7,000 and had a personal fortune of $4,500; Henrietta had personal assets of $2,000.
