Born in IL to first-generation English parents, Edward C. Hemmings spent his years prior to age 5 there before moving to Charlevoix, MI, according to the 1880 US Census. He rented a room on Fremont Street in Chicago in 1900, and worked as a draftsman. He relocated to CA before 1908, the year he married in Alameda, CA.

The 1910 US Census noted that Hemmings and his wife lived in Sacramento, CA, at either 806 or 826 H Street. A George MacDonald (born c. 1888 in CA), presumably Laura's brother, rented a room with them. His father was James Hemmings (born c. 1840 in England), who in 1880 worked as a painter. His wife was Harriet Hemmings (born c. 1847 in England), who managed the household consisting of Edward and his older brother, Frederick (born c. 1871 in England.) The family emigrated from the UK to IL sometime between the years 1871 and 1874.

He married Laura Alice MacDonald (1882-1974) on 06/24/1908 in Alameda County, CA.
