John G. Proctor was born in 04/1853 in Ontario, Canada. (The US Census of 1900 reported Proctor's date of birth to have been in 04/1854.) As young boy, he lived with his wife and four children in Ingersoll, ON, in 1861. Ingersoll was located about 26 miles northeast of London, ON. In 1861, another Proctor lived with the family, Harry Proctor, a tailor, (born c. 1838 in New Brunswick, Canada). He wed his wife, Zillah, in Ingersoll, ON, in 1876.

Between 1879 and 1881, at least, Proctor worked as an architect in Wingham, ON, a city about 98 miles due west of Toronto. He dwelled there with this wife and two daughters according to the 1881 Canadian Census. In 1883, Proctor resided on Madison Avenue at the corner of 15th Street in Fargo, ND. (See Fargo, North Dakota, City Directory, 1883, p. 156.) He remained in Fargo until about 1885.

The 1920 US Census recorded that Proctor immigrated to the US in 1890, although this appears to have been incorrect. Proctor had an architectural partnership with Charles N. Daniels in Tacoma, WA, between 1885 and 1888.

The architect lived with his family at 920 Proctor Avenue in Tacoma, WA in 1900. At this time, the household included his wife, and two daughters, Margaret Maria Dennis (born c. 06/1879 in Canada) and Zillah Dennis (born c. 04/1889 in WA). Spouse

Proctor married Zillah Alexander (born c. 12/1855 in Canada) in Ingersoll, ON. According to the 1900 US Census, they married c. 1875, and Zillah had had four children by that time, three of whom were still alive. John G. Proctor began the naturalization process on 03/14/1892.
