Personal

Relocation

Born in Detroit, MI, George Wellington Stoddard resided at 488 Putman Avenue in that city in 1900. At this time, the household included George, his parents, brother Russell, and his paternal grandmother Helen "Nellie" Seward Stoddard (born 07/28/1843 in Cleveland, OH-d. 11/04/1908 in Toledo, OH). In addition, an Irish-born servant, Mary Kelley (born c. 03/1882 in Ireland), lived with the family. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1900; Census Place: Detroit Ward 8, Wayne, Michigan; Page: 6; Enumeration District: 0089; FHL microfilm: 1240750, accessed 08/24/2021.)

Stoddard attended the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, graduating just in time for World War I.

He resettled in Seattle, WA, by 1920 with his father, probably after war-time service. In that year, he lived with his parents at 158 28th Avenue. The Stoddards also employed a widowed 25-year-old Japanese woman, Suma Fujioka (born c. 1895 in Japan), as a household servant. She would marry Tosaburo Morimoto on 01/25/1920 in Seattle, WA. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: Seattle, King, Washington; Roll: T625_1929; Page: 1B; Enumeration District: 269, accessed 08/24/2021 and Ancestry.com, Source Citation Washington State Archives; Olympia, Washington; Washington Marriage Records, 1854-2013; Reference Number: kingcoarchmc72066, accessed 08/24/2021.) The Stoddards lived one street away from the Alhadeff Family, who resided at 153 29th Avenue, a prominent family in Seattle business circles, who were one of the founding families of the Congregation Ezra Bessaroth.

Stoddard's last known address was in the 98102 zip code of Seattle, WA.

Parents

Stoddard practiced from 1920-1929 with his father, Lewis Malcolm Stoddard (d. 1929), in the firm, Stoddard and Son, Architects and Builders. In the 1920 US Census, Lewis Stoddard was listed as a builder.

Lewis Stoddard was not always in the building trades. The 1900 US Census indicated that he worked as a steamboat captain in that year. Lewis's father, George Stoddard, was a sailor and captain of a ship in 1870, when they lived in Manhattan, once a boom town in Lucas County, OH. (See Source Citation Year: 1870; Census Place: Manhatten, Lucas, Ohio; Roll: M593_1236; Page: 19A, accessed 08/24/2021.)

His mother was Laura Stoddard, who managed the household and its two children. George had an older brother, Russell (born c. 02/1889 in OH).

Spouse

He wed Majorie C. Stoddard.
