Personal

Relocation

Bertram Dudley Stuart was born in London, England, possibly while his parents lived in the Surrey district of Epsom. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information FreeBMD. England & Wales, Civil Registration Birth Index, 1837-1915 [database on-line]. Lehi, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2006. Original data: General Register Office. He spent his early years in Kent, having been baptized at Christ Church, Bexleyheath, Kent, England, on 08/16/1885. At the time of his baptism, his parents resided on Erith Road in Bexleyheath. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Bexley Local Studies and Archive Centre; Bexleyheath, London, England; Bexley Parish Registers; Reference Number: PA23C/1/B/5, accessed 06/08/2022.)

Stuart migrated first to Edmonton, AB, and then to Vancouver, BC, Canada. This transplantation from the UK to Canada would have been legally easy for a British subject. He became a Canadian citizen while he lived in that country, according to his World War I registration card. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Registration State: Washington; Registration County: King Source Information: U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2005, accessed 06/08/2022.)

Bertram Dudley Stuart resided in Seattle, WA, c. 1910. when he lived in his mother's house with his step-father, Arthur Sackville-West.

Later, he moved to Seattle, WA, permanently on 06/26/1915, traveling by train from Vancouver, BC, via Blaine, WA, to Seattle, WA, aboard a Great Northern Railway train. His address on 09/12/1918 was 6019 28th Avenue NE in Seattle. In 1920, the US Census located Stuart, his wife and two children living at 2429 2nd Avenue West in Seattle. They owned this house at the time. This census also noted that Betram had initiated US naturalization paperwork. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: Seattle, King, Washington; Roll: T625_1927; Page: 3B; Enumeration District: 142, accessed 06/08/2022.)

In 1930-1931, he and his family resided in a rented house at 6823 18th Avenue NE in Seattle. They paid $60 per month in rent. in a neighborhood of mostly single-family-owned homes. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Seattle, King, Washington; Page: 32A; Enumeration District: 0009; FHL microfilm: 2342226, accessed 06/08/2022 and Ancestry.com, Source Citation National Archives and Records Administration (Nara); Washington, D.C.; Naturalization Records of the U.s. District Court For the Western District of Washington, 1890-1957; Microfilm Roll: 92; Microfilm Serial: M1542, accessed 06/08/2022.)

He reported an address of 3413 60th Avenue SW, Seattle, WA, in 1942.

He died in Seattle at the age of 92, and last lived in the city's 98116 zip code.

Parents

His parents were Bertram Stuart and Evelyn "Eva" Glasse (d. 04/23/1916 in Seattle, WA). Baptismal records listed his parents names as Betram Dudley Stuart and Evelyn Stuart. According to this church record, Bertram was a merchant in Bexleyheath, England. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Bexley Local Studies and Archive Centre; Bexleyheath, London, England; Bexley Parish Registers; Reference Number: PA23C/1/B/5, accessed 06/08/2022.)

If the baptismal record was correct, then Betram Dudley Stuart, the architect, was a "junior." This would have made the architect's son, Betram Dudley Stuart III. Contradicting this, however, was a King County certificate of marriage form that listed his father as "Betram W. Stuart." In this case, he would have been Betram Dudley Stuart, Sr., and his son, Bertram Dudley Stuart, Jr. There are other errors on this transcribed King County form that cast doubt on its accuracy.

His mother's maiden name was "Glasse" or something close to this, according to the architect's 1910 marriage certificate. Betram Stuart was likely her first husband, who either died or she divorced before 1901. By that date, she had married Arthur Sackville-West, Sr., (brn 01/08/1866 in Ireland-d. 02/13/1913 in Seattle, WA) and lived in Willesden, Middlesex, England. Their household included a son, Bertram's half-brother, Arthur "Jack" Sackville-West, Jr., (born 07/15/1891 in England-d. 01/03/1983 in Spokane, WA) and a servant, Florence Wyatt (born c. 1883 in England). Arthur, Sr., worked as a company secretary according to the 1901 Census of England. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Class: RG13; Piece: 1223; Folio: 133; Page: 34 Source Information Ancestry.com. 1901 England Census [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2005, accessed 06/08/2022.) Given the birthdate of Arthur, Jr., it is possible that she married Arthur, Sr., c. 1890.

By 1910, Evelyn lived with Arthur Sackville-West, Sr. and Jr., in Seattle, WA. At this time, they resided at 517 Harrison Street in Seattle. Arthur, Sr., worked as a bookkeeper for a gas company. A "Douglas Stuart," a draftsman, was listed as living at this address, likely Bertram Dudley Stuart, Evelyn's son. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: Seattle Ward 3, King, Washington; Roll: T624_1659; Page: 14A; Enumeration District: 0148; FHL microfilm: 1375672, accessed 06/08/2022.) It is likely that Bertram Dudley Stuart lived in the US with his mother, before moving to Vancouver during the early 1910s and then moving back by 1915.

Spouse

He wed Edith May Hatton (born 05/21/1884 in Hurst, Ashton, England) on 06/04/1910 in Seattle, WA. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Washington, U.S., County Marriages, 1855-2008 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014, accessed 06/08/2022.) She was one of eleven children of Reuben Hatton (born 06/03/1842 in Nottinghamshire, England-d. 11/28/1897 in Lebanon, NH), a lithographic printer, and Annie Bennett (born 09/20/1841 in Gloucestershire, England-d. 05/20/1919 in Seattle, WA). Edith came to the US in about 1892, with her family, first landing in Boston, MA, according to Bertram Stuart's US naturalization paperwork of 09/04/1931. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation National Archives and Records Administration (Nara); Washington, D.c.; Naturalization Records of the U.S. District Court For the Western District of Washington, 1890-1957; Microfilm Roll: 92; Microfilm Serial: M1542, accessed 06/08/2022.)

According to the 1930 US Census, Edith was still an alien, likely a British citizen. This census also recorded that she immigrated to the US in 1890. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Seattle, King, Washington; Page: 32A; Enumeration District: 0009; FHL microfilm: 2342226, accessed 06/08/2022.) According to this naturalization paperwork of 1931, she entered the US in Boston, MA, in "about 1892." (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation National Archives and Records Administration (Nara); Washington, D.C; Naturalization Records of the U.s. District Court For the Western District of Washington, 1890-1957; Microfilm Roll: 92; Microfilm Serial: M1542, accessed 06/08/2022.)

Children

He and Edith had two children: Gladwyn May "Gladys" Stuart (born 02/27/1812 in Vancouver, BC, Canada) and Bertram D. Stuart III (born 06/02/1913 in Vancouver, BC, Canada). The 1930 UW Census indicated that Gladwyn and Betram, Jr., immigrated to the US in 1914. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Seattle, King, Washington; Page: 32A; Enumeration District: 0009; FHL microfilm: 2342226, accessed 06/08/2022.) They most likely immigrated a year later on 06/26/1915, as noted on Stuart's US naturalization paperwork of 09/04/1931. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation National Archives and Records Administration (Nara); Washington, D.c.; Naturalization Records of the U.S. District Court For the Western District of Washington, 1890-1957; Microfilm Roll: 92; Microfilm Serial: M1542, accessed 06/08/2022.)

In 1942, Bertram Dudley Stuart III worked at the Northern Pacific Bank Note Company. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation National Archives at St. Louis; St. Louis, Missouri; WWII Draft Registration Cards for Washington, 10/16/1940-03/31/1947; Record Group: Records of the Selective Service System, 147; Box: 173, accessed 06/08/2022.)

Biographical Notes

His World War I draft registration card of 09/12/1918 described Stuart at Caucasian with blue-gray eyes and light brown hair. He was short of stature and of medium build. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Registration State: Washington; Registration County: King Source Information: U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2005, accessed 06/08/2022.)

Stuart began the naturalization process from being a Canadian citizen to an American in 1924. It concluded in 1931. Stuart had two friends, Frank L. Vernon, an insurance agent, and B.A. Talmadge, a printer, serve as naturalization witnesses. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation National Archives and Records Administration (Nara); Washington, D.c.; Naturalization Records of the U.S. District Court For the Western District of Washington, 1890-1957; Microfilm Roll: 92; Microfilm Serial: M1542, accessed 06/08/2022.)

The architect made a trip to Brazil, landing there on 01/16/1952. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Immigration Cards, 1900-1965 [database on-line]. Lehi, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2016, accessed 06/08/2022.)
