Personal

Born in Westmoreland County, PA, Swartz went to school in Champaign-Urbana, IL, c. 1868-1877; after this, he worked in the Engineering Department of The Santa Fe Railroad, supervising track construction in Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico. He moved to California to survey a line going through the Santa Cruz Mountains at Pacheco Pass near Gilroy in 1890. When this job suddenly ended, Swartz ventured back to Fresno, CA, where his family resided, and started an architecture and engineering practice. His son, Frederic C. Swartz, also became an architect, joining his father's practice in Fresno in 1909.
