Born in San Francisco, CA, Frank Tolles Chamberlin worked as a etcher, engraver and painter primarily in Pasadena, CA; D. W. Tryon instructed Chamberlin at the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford, CT, as did George Bridgman at the Art Students League, New York, NY; while in New York, Chamberlin worked as a draftsman in an architectural firm; in 1908, he won a prestigious American Academy Prix de Rome prize for painting, providing him a three-year residence in Rome and elsewhere in Italy to study the frescoes of Giotto and paintings by Tintoretto; at the American Academy, he was taught mural painting by Frank Millet; when he returned to the United States, Chamberlin taught at Columbia University, New York, NY until 1920; he continued teaching when he moved to California at the Otis Art Institute and the University of Southern California, both in Los Angeles; he was also a co-founder of the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, CA; settling in Pasadena, CA, Chamberlin maintained memberships in the California Art Club, California Water Color Society, the California Printmakers, the Pasadena Fine Arts Club, the New York Architectural League and the American Federation of Arts; Chamberlin died in Pasadena, Los Angeles, County, CA;
