Shattuck arrived in Los Angeles, CA, from New Hampshire during the land boom years of the 1880s; he was listed in the Los Angeles City Directory, 1888-1890, as a "contractor and builder" located at South Virginia Avenue near Ficket Street, Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, CA; according to the largely untrustworthy historian Henry Withey, he became an important early designer of country clubs in Southern California; Shattuck lived in Glendale, CA, in 1920, according to the US Federal Census with his wife and one other person.

Shattuck married Julia M. Goddard, (born circa 08/16/1879 in KS-d. 02/25/1945), a woman 14 years younger than he; they married circa 1903.

Charles and Julia Shattuck had a daughter, Gwendolyn (born c. 1916 in CA).
