"Extant records of John B. Anthony's Berkeley buildings suggest that the Harris residence was his first commission in this town. If that is indeed the case, then Joe Harris was taking somewhat of a chance on the architect. Little is known about John Beasley Anthony (1903-1983). He was born in Alabama but must have come to California at a young age, since Mildred (Mrs. Louis) Stein, who was born in California, knew him in high school. According to Mrs. Stein, Anthony had studied in Paris. In 1939, he would design a French-style house for the Steins at 216 Amherst Avenue, in north Berkeley." Text by Daniella Thompson.
