Firm Notes

Cornell, Howland, Hayes and Merryfield, Incorporated, Consulting Engineers and Planners operated in Corvallis, OR, at 1600 SW Western Boulevard in 1970. It was a full-service engineering-planning firm, performing soils investigations, consulting engineering, consultation to determine appropriate facilities and services, preparation of detail designs for master plans, completion of construction drawings for installation of all site facilities, creation of construction specifications and contracts, and administration and inspection of construction contracts as the client's agent.

Frederick Merryfield and three graduates of his Engineering program at Oregon State College (OSC) founded Cornell, Howland, Hayes and Merryfield, Incorporated, along with engineerrs Archie Rice and Ralph Roderick, in January 1946. The parternship finished approximately 200 projects between 1946 and 1949, much of its infrastructure work in hydraulics and wastewater management. This rapid succcess enabled the company to buid a new headquarters in Corvallis by 1949, and a Boise, ID, branch office opened in 1950. The firm incorporated as Cornell Howland, Hayes and Merryfiled, in 1966. (See Funding Universe.com, "CH2M Hill Ltd. History," accessed 05/12/2019.)

The firm, long known by the shorthand name "CH2M," merged with the CA-based Clair A. Hill and Associates, to became "CH2M HIll," in 1971.

CH2M and CH2M Hill were based in Corvallis until 1980, when its headquarters was shifted to a location more central to the company's expanding operations, Meridian, CO, outside of Denver in Douglas County.
