The company began in Japan as the Okuragumi Shokai [the first Okura engineering] Company in 1873. It became known as Nippon Doboku [Japan public works] Company, Limited, in 1887, owned by Okura Kihachiro, Fujita Denzaburo, Shibusawa Eiichi. Okura Kihachiro, on his own, went on to found the Okura Doboku Gumi [Okura public works and engineering] Corporation in 1917 and the Nippon Doboku [Japan public works] Corporation in 1920. After World War II, it renamed itself to Taisei Kanetsu [Taisei was a town located in the Kudō District, Hiyama, Hokkaidō, Japan; kanetsu means "heating" or it also may refer to a place name Kan-Etsu, what is now Niigata Prefecture] Corporation. It opened its first American office, known as the Taisei America Corporation, in New York, NY, in 1982. It transferred its American headquarters to 444 South Flower Street, Los Angeles in 1985 and then to East Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach three years later.
