The earlier beer hall of Jacob Philippi was renovated by Mrs. Mary Banning (wife of Los Angeles port founder, Phineas Banning) into a house for herself. (This was perhaps after Phineas Banning's death in 1885.)

The heiress, Mary Hollister Banning, was the second wife of the important Los Angeles businessman, Phineas Banning (1830-1885), widely called "the Father of the Port of Los Angeles."
