A team of two teachers and one writer collaborated to open the first Starbucks on Western Avenue near the Pike Place Market in 1971. The cafe moved up the hill to a new location in the market in 1976.

In 12/2007, there were 15,000 Starbuck stores around the world, with seven new stores being added daily.
