This labyrnthine section of U.S. Highway 580 was first built in the 1950s and later seismically retrofitted in the late 1990s after the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989. The maze stands at or near the intersection of four highways. On 04/29/2007, a section of this highway interchange collapsed when the heat of a burning gasoline tanker melted the road's supporting steel structure. It was expected that CalTrans engineers would rebuild the highway to the higher seismic standards imposed after 2000. Repair of the collapsed roadway section was estimated to cost around $10 million.
