Once a citadel for the Army dating back to 1859, military prisoners rebuilt a prison on the site in 1909. It became a maximum-security penitentiary in 1934. The facility became too expensive to operate and was closed by Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy in the early 1960s. In 2007, tours of the island prison cost $28.75 for adults.
