This neighborhood grocery was owned by husband and wife, Steve and Debi Mullen, who maintained inventories of low-cost food in low-income neighborhoods. The food was purchased as overstocked, and was of the same quality as any other. The Mullens also owned Rainier Grocery Outlet in Seattle. The food distributor, Grocery Outlets, Incorporated, of Berkeley, CA, sells the overstocked food on consignment to local distributors, like the Mullens. In 2007, there were 144 of these stores, 30 in Washington State.
The Madrona store opened in 2005, and had 17,000 square feet.
