This 18.4-acre site is bounded by Galvez Street on the northwest, El Camino Real on the northeast, Nelson Road on the southwest and Sam McDonald Mall on the southeast.

This 50,000-seat venue for football was created from the existing 85,500-seat shell of the previous stadium. It cost $90 million to construct and took only 9 months to complete. Long-time Stanford donor, John Arrillaga, a Bay Area developer and alumnus, supervised the project and donated approximately $35 million for its completion. The stadium consisted of an upper and lower bowl, seating far fewer people, but possessing greater amenities, such as improved bathrooms and eating facilities. A track was removed from the perimeter of the football field and the lower bowl moved closer to the playing field.
