Part of Kohn Hall is occupied by the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics, named for the Norwegian-American engineer, Fred Kavli, who started Kavlico, a manufacturer of navigational sensors for the defense and aircraft industries. Kavli founded his own philanthropic foundation that created scientific institutes at Caltech, University of California, Santa Barbara, University of California, San Diego, Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Yale and Cornell, among others.
