Overview

The United Stated Army erected military barracks at Benicia, CA, on 04/30/1849, under the command of Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Silas Casey. These barracks housed soldiers in the Army's Second US Infantry, and composed the headquarters of the Army's Department of the Pacific between 1851 and 1957. The US Army erected a wooden gun powder magazine at this Benicia site in 09/1851, calling it at first the California Ordnance Depot, Benicia, CA. Both the barracks and arsenal became known as the Benicia Arsenal in later years. The facility closed in 1964.
