The main house was demolished, leaving this remnant of what was once a large estate. Timothy Hopkins received the property in 1888 as a wedding present from his adoptive mother, Mary Frances Sherwood Hopkins (1818-1891). Her husband, Mark Hopkins, (1814 -1878 had been one of the "Big Four," owners of the Central Pacific Railroad, the first transcontinental line.
