This prison was part of the Western Command of the Washington State Department of Corrections.
Begun as a Medium Custody facility in 1985 to serve 450 inmates, it was altered to serve as a Closed Custody prison in 1991. In 1990, accommodations for 400 more prisoners was made. Nearly 70% of the inmates in the 900-man prison were convicted of violent offenses (c. 2006); the facility has medium, close, and maximum custody housing divisions. Four hundred staff members oversee Clallam Bay which also operates a garment manufacturing operation.
