Covered in rose granite, the forty-seven story First Interstate Center (later the Wells Fargo Center) contained 1,323,055 gross square feet, 940,648 net (2011), and occupied an entire city block, a 56,400-square-foot site. McKinley Architects produced the design for the hexagonal building--supported by a steel frame--that was designed to rest on a landscaped, three-level plaza. In 2007, Beacon Capital Partners of Boston, MA, purchased the Wells Fargo Center for $403 million or nearly $430 per square foot. In 2011, the building and property had a value of $207,125,000, down from a high of $323,765,000 in 2008. Caroline Tobin in Downtown Seattle Walking Tours said of the building: "The First Interstate reflects current zoning laws and planning policies, especially in its extensive use of bonuses, including the plaza and hillclimb assist." (See Caroline Tobin, Downtown Seattle Walking Tours, [Seattle: City of Seattle, 1985], p. 52.)
