Grant configured his own house in a cross-shape, with a carport on the south, the master bedroom on the west, the childrens' bedrooms on the north, and the living-dining room on the east. The plan was zoned to provide privacy for the master bedroom from children and the living room. The site sloped under the living room, forcing the architect to elevate it on columns, but also giving it added visual interest.
