Clarence Hanford was a prominent merchant in Seattle, WA, son of Edward and Abby J. (Holgate) Hanford; his family settled in the U.S. before the American Revolution. He commissioned Bebb and Mendel to design a large Neo-Classical Revival house with a prominent, two-story projecting portico suppported by four Corinthian columns.
