In 10/1912, S. Yawasaki, T.S. Takemoto, T. Tomisa, O. Okinaka, N. Hirashita, U.Geshi, K. Saneto, and Y. Yura incorporated the Buddhist Church of Bakersfield. The church cost 3,314.50 to build in 1912. The altar, composed of joined wood components, was built in Japan and reassembled in Bakersfield, CA; it remained in 2006 the oldest altar surviving in a Buddhist church in the United states. The church is located in what had become the segregated Chinatown section of Bakersfield in 1911, roughly bounded by 19th, 20th, and 21st Streets, and on L and M streets.

For many years, the church has served as a dojo for the Bakersfield Judo Club.
