Architect James Stephen (1858-1938) designed this ornate, Beaux-Arts Classical building during his time as Architect for the Everett Public Schools. Stephen also worked in this capacity for the Seattle Public Schools before 1910, designing at least 18 schools for the district.

Additions and alterations occurred in 1959, 1964, and 1969. The architectural firm of Bryant, Butterfield and Frets did some of this renovation work. Everett High School underwent an historic renovation in 1995 costing approximately $12 million; an early 1960s-annex was demolished during this renovation.
