Building History

The West Coast architectural journal, Architecture/West, published this announcement soliciting entries for an architectural competition to design the University of California, Berkeley's new art center in 01/1965: "The Regents of the University of California, Berkeley, extend an invitation to enter competition to select an architect for the proposed University Arts Center. The competition will be anonymous and will be conducted in two stages. It has been approved by the American Institute of Architects. The winning entry will be awarded either the contract for architectural services or a cash prize of $25,000. Each other final competitor will receive $5,000. In the event the jury selects no winner, all seven finalists will receive $5,000 each. If all preliminary services are rejected, the seven most meritorious entries will receive $1,500 each. Entries must be submitted no later than January 30, 1965 and should be addressed to Eldridge T. Spencer, FAIA, Professional Advisor for the University Arts Center Competition, 251 Kearny Street, San Francisco 94108. A $20 registration fee is required." (See "Competitions," Architecture/West, vol. 71, no. 1, 01/1965, p. 9.)
