Building History

The first Arrowhead Springs Hotel burned in a fire on 03/17/1885. A second was planned right after the first fire, but it is unclear when it was completed. An article in the San Bernardino Daily Courier of 11/10/1886 reported that an "addition" to the hotel was making progress: "Fifteen carpenters are at work on the addition to the Arrowhead hotel. They have several months work before them, so large are the projected improvements. Under its present management the Arrowhead watering place will soon be the first in California. In the excellence of its waters and their extraordinary healing and restorative properties Arrowhead is undoubtedly the first now. The attested cures which have been effected at Arrowhead, leave no room for doubt as to their efficacy." (See "Local Brevities," San Bernardino Daily Courier, vol. 1, no. 27, 11/10/1886, p. 3.) Blank spaces for classified advertisements for the hotel were published in the newspaper throughout October and November of 1886, indicating that they were "This space reserved for the Arrowhead Hotel," suggesting that its opening was pending. It is clear that it was open by at least 08/16/1887, when a list of guests was published in the San Bernardino Daily Courier. (See "Local Brevities," San Bernardino Daily Courier, vol. 2, no. 109, 08/16/1887, p. 4.)

This building lasted for about ten years when it, too, burned down on 07/04/1895. An article in the San Francisco Call stated: "The Arrowhead Hot Springs Hotel, destroyed by fire on July 4, is to be rebuilt further down the mountain. The structure will be larger and of stone. Local capitalists will be asked to subscribe to the stock. Water from the springs will be introduced to the new building by gravity." (See "Arrowhead Springs Hotel to Be Rebuilt," San Francisco Call, vol. 78, no. 46, 07/16/1895, p. 4.)

Demolition

Razed by fire on 07/04/1895, perhaps due to a patriotic fireworks mishap.
