In 1878, the first and only Baptist church in Los Angeles was located on Spring Street between 4th and 5th Streets.

Overview

Los Angeles's first Baptist congregation formed in 09/1874 and operated in a building on North Spring Street in 05/1878. At this time, its activities were as follows: "Services at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday School directly after morning services. Seats free and the public are cordially invited. Prayer meetings Thursday evenings." (See "Church Chimes," Los Angeles Herald, vol. 9, no. 146, 05/19/1878, p. 3.)

Building Notes

The 1st Baptist congregation was led by Pastor Joseph Smale in 1905; Dr. J. Lewis Smith, who came to Los Angeles from Tacoma, WA, led the congregation after 1905.
