Highway 16 spanning Tacoma Narrows between Tacoma and Gig Harbor, WA;

This bridge was built to add highway lanes linking Tacoma and the Kitsap Peninsula, an area of rapid population growth in Puget Sound. The $849 million bridge has been dealyed in its completion; it was set to open in 04/2007, then 07/2007, and later 08/2007. When finished, this bridge and Tacoma Narrows Bridge #2 (finished in 1950) will function simultaneously, the new bridge handling eastbound traffic, the old, westbound. The third bridge is 5,400 feet long. The first driver used the bridge at 4:01 AM on Monday, 07/16/2007.

Parsons Transportation Group provided most of the engineering design expertise for this bridge. Engineering details, field work, and spinning and cable-wrapping equipment was done by NSKB, a consortium between Japanese steel maker, Nippon Steel Corporation and Kawada Industries, Incorporated.
