Researchers at the University of Washington spent three and a half years testing new bridge designs before starting on the second span; Begun in the summer of 1948, Washington's Governor Langley opened the bridge in October 14, 1950; this bridge spans 5,979 feet; piers of the original bridge were re-utilized to support the second;

This bridge was designed to carry 60,00 vehicles per day, but by 2007, was averaging 90,000.
