Tarzana was a portion of the 550-acre parcel that writer, Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950), purchased from the Estate of newspaperman, Harrison Gray Otis, in 1919; three years after buying this large spread and spendling lavishly, Burroughs needed to raise money and began to sub-divide his property beginning in 1922. Burroughs created the fictional character, Tarzan, a figure featured in books and movies that made him a pop-culture icon from the 1920s to the present;
