John D. Spreckels (1853-1926), a San Francisco resident and owner of the San Francisco Call newspaper, purchased the San Diego Union newspaper in 1890 and the San Diego Tribune in 1901. Spreckels, who had been buying investments in the San Diego since the late 1880s, moved to the city following San Francisco's catastrophic 04/18/1906 earthquake; Harrison Albright, who himself had moved to California in 1905, designed this and several more buildings for Spreckels in the San Diego area.

Albright did an addition to the San Diego Union Building in 1913;
