Overview

This liquor store shared the name of long-established San Francisco hotel, The Parker House.

Building History

In 1867, the Parker House liquor store operated at 617-619 Montgomery Street in what would become San Francisco's Chinatown district. Harvey D. Parker and William H. Vandewater operated the Parker House at this time. The San Francisco Directory for the Year Commencing September, 1867, (San Francisco: Henry G. Langley, 1867), pp. 560-565. contained almost six full pages containing retail liquor merchants operating in the city. Additionally, Parker and Vandewater could afford to spend for a full-page advertisement in the 1867 directory, suggested their high profit margins. Full page ads were most often paid for by banks and insurance companies at this time.
