Building History

This wood-frame, board and batten railroad depot was erected by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company in 1876. As noted by the website SCV History.com, a serious drought in 1877 caused well-water levels to drop seriously, necessitating a move of the station. In 01/1878, this modest building was transported two miles south, to enable more reliable access to water sources. The Southern Pacific's second station was re-erected on the northeast corner of market Street and Railroad Avenue. (See SCV Hostory.com, "SPRR Newhall Depot, 1909," accessed 09/14/2023.)
