Overview

The 1st United Methodist Church in Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA, shared its site with the Oaks School and other buildings making up a large complex.

Building History

This was the second church for the Methodist congregation of Hollywood, CA, the first known as the the "1st Methodist Episcopal Church" operated between 1911 and about 1926. Construction of the larger, second church began in 1926 or so, of which the first portion completed (in 1927) was the Recreational Hall.

The English-born architect Thomas P. Barber designed the complex in a version of the English Gothic style. Barber worked with the Italian structural engineer, Francesco Adolfo Salvatore Sabato Ceraldi (1888-1960), who worked in Los Angeles for only about six years between 1924 and 1930. The building was executed in reinforced concrete.
