In 1912, architect William Doty Van Siclen relocated from Seattle to Edmonton, AB, likely with the promise of designing the Royal Alexandra Hotel in Edmonton, AB. Little can be found on this hotel, suggesting that it was never completed and perhaps not even started.

Building History

An notice in the 09/25/1912 issue of Contract Record, a Canadian construction journal, stated: "Hotel for the Royal Alexandra, Architects, Van Siclen & Macombe [sic], completed plans for 12-storey building; 6 stories will be built this season, reinforced concrete construction." (See "Public Buildings, Churches, Schools, etc., Contracts Award: Edmonton, Alta.," Contract Record, vol. 26, no, 39, 09/25/1912, p. 68.) The Biographcial Dictionary of Architects in Canada 1800-1950.org indicated that the Royal Alexandra was located at First Street near Peace Avenue. amd it dated from 1912-1913. Building Notes

It is unclear if this building was erected. There was a Royal Alexandra Hotel that opened in Winnpeg, MB, on 07/19/1906, part of a complex comprised of a train station, office building and the hotel, all owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway. This hotel was named for Queen Alexandra of Denmark (1844-1925), wife of King Edward VII (1841-1910).
